Study of the United States (Teaching in Social Sciences and Humanities)

All applicants must meet the Program eligibility requirements (click to review the requirements).

Teach undergraduate or graduate courses, or a combination of both, in field of specialization. Courses must relate to the "American experience," i.e., taught from the American academic perspective on subjects related to United States history, public policy, sociology, law, film, popular culture, literature, communications, education, political science, business management, etc.

All Disciplines (Teaching/Research)

All applicants must meet the Program eligibility requirements (click to review the requirements).

Teach two undergraduate or graduate courses, or a combination of both, per semester in field of specialization. Since a normal load for Fulbright teaching grantees in Japan is four courses, this reduced teaching load allows grantees to conduct research on a topic of their choice. Courses meet usually once a week for 90-105 minutes.

Conduct research in area of specialization. Grantees are expected to submit a publishable report about their research within six months after the end of the grant. Applicants must demonstrate how their research will contribute to the Japan-U.S. relationship in their field and to their own professional development.

Award

U.S.-Japan International Education Administrators Award

All applicants must meet the Program eligibility requirements (click to review the requirements).

Participate in a two-week group seminar designed to familiarize U.S. higher education administrators with Japan's higher education system, society and culture. The seminar consists of briefings, campus visits, appointments with select government officials, and meetings with Japanese international education professionals.
