Work Permit for U.S. Scholars

A work permit is required for Fulbright Scholars to Guyana, and will be arranged by the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown. On arrival at port of entry, the Immigration officer at the airport will grant you and your family a 90 day period of stay. Grantees should not be concerned about this short period as it is routine to grant an initial 90 day period. The grantee should provide a copy of their passport bio data page and entry stamp to U.S. Embassy Public Diplomacy Section at the earliest opportunity in order to apply to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Georgetown for an extension of stay/work permit. Once the approval memo is received from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Fulbright Scholar will submit their passport to the Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Section to process the extension from the Immigration Department. Extensions have always been granted. Applicants remain in status once the application has been filed even if the formal response from Immigration takes several weeks.
