Fulbright-British Virgin Islands Scholar Award at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC)
United Kingdom
Number of recipients
In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
The Fulbright British Virgin Islands Scholar Award at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) covers a six month research project in multiple disciplines at the university.
As part of this award, the Scholar will assist the host institution in classroom teaching, and may conduct workshops, lectures, seminars, and other related activities related to the Scholar's field of expertise and interest. This may include public readings, performances, participation in conferences, or lectures from work or works-in-progress.
HLSCC is a two-year institution located on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. It is one of only two institutions of higher education in the territory, and it has the higher enrolment. It offers several associate degree and workforce certification programs in service of the labour needs of the British Virgin Islands, whose main industries are in financial services and tourism. HLSCC is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and the National Center for Construction Education and Research. With an enrolment of 600 students, the College prepares graduates to enter directly into the workforce as well as to complete further studies abroad.

To name a few opportunities, previous Fulbrighters have participated in Highland games, organised writing workshops in picturesque locations, and visited National Trust properties across the UK.
With over 160 universities, the UK is home to innovative and globally significant research and teaching projects spanning all disciplines and sectors. Fulbright awards are offered across all 4 nations and the British Virgin Islands, with a range of all disciplines awards and subject-specific awards.

By fostering international perspectives, cultivating cross-cultural understanding, and establishing robust networks, Fulbright alumni return to their home countries equipped with a diverse set of skills and insights. Notably, Fulbright Scholars exhibit a heightened scholarly and policy impact in the four years following the exchange compared to the four years preceding it.
Previous Fulbrighters to the UK have described their experiences as transformational, allowing them to expand their research horizons, develop new connections and collaborations, and inspire new ideas and ways of thinking.
Explore firsthand accounts from US Scholars like Jay Garvey, who discovered opportunities to share his work among scholarly communities beyond his sub-discipline, and Marcy Karin, who found a myriad of connections between her research and the daily lives of people across the Atlantic.
