Number of recipients
In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
The Fulbright Award to Slovakia offers scholars the opportunity to conduct research, teach, or engage in professional projects in the heart of Europe. This award welcomes scientists, researchers, lecturers, artists and professionals to contribute their experience and gain enriching experiences.
There are 4 categories of awards:
Teaching Award: Scholars teach minimum of two courses at undergraduate or graduate level and may assist with mentoring students, developing curricula, or enhancing study programs.
Research Award: Scholars can conduct research in any discipline. A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required for this category.
Teaching/Research Award: This combines teaching and research responsibilities. Scholars are required to teach at least one course while conducting their research. It is strongly recommended to coordinate activity allocation with the host institution. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required for this category.
Professional Project Award: Designed for professional development, this award focuses on education or training projects. Applicants must provide a detailed description of activities that will benefit their professional growth, field, home institution, or community.
Any accredited HEI or research institution. For professional projects, options may include non-profits, libraries, archives, museums, cultural centers, government agencies, or similar institutions. For guidance, contact dasa@fulbright.sk.
Award Length: One semester (3 to 5 months). For Teaching Awards, the maximum length is 4 months, reflecting the typical 15-week semester duration. The academic year is divided into two semesters: Fall Semester runs from Mid-September through December (exams continue through January); Spring Semester runs from February through May (exams continue through June).
Award Dates:
Teaching or Teaching/Research Awards: Must start in September 2026 or January/February 2027.
Research or Professional Projects: Flexible dates between August 2026 and June 2027 (extendable to August 2027 with host institution confirmation).

An invitation letter is highly recommended. Applicants who do not have an established contact with a potential host institution are encouraged to reach out to dasa@fulbright.sk for assistance.
The invitation letter should confirm the proposed dates and outline the scholar’s planned activities, including teaching or research plans.
Applicants without the invitation letter may indicate preferred affiliations. The Commission will work with the nominated candidate to finalize the affiliation in consultation with the candidate and the potential host institution.
Please note that during summer months (July and August), Slovak institutions may not operate as usual, making communication more challenging. Applicants are advised to be patient and plan well in advance to secure the invitation letter.
All teaching is conducted in English. For research involving Slovak archives or resources, Slovak language proficiency may be necessary.
For candidates in the Research and Teaching/Research categories, a Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) is required.
For candidates in the Teaching and Professional Project categories, a Ph.D. is not required.
You may be asked to participate in an interview as part of the in-country selection process.
Online interviews for all recommended candidates may be conducted via Zoom in January or February 2026.

Base stipend
Housing allowance (a grantee is responsible for arranging their own housing)
Travel allowance of $ 1,500.
Allowance of up to $1,000 for a grantee or up to $1,500 if accompanied by dependent(s) is provided to help cover expenses to obtain a Slovak National Visa.
Dependent allowance of $200/month for one accompanying dependent, ($300/month if placed in Bratislava or Košice), or $400/month for two or more accompanying dependents.
Dependent travel allowance of $ 500 for one dependent and $ 1,000 for two or more dependents.
Dependents must remain in the country for 80% of the grant period to qualify for the allowances.
Dependents must accompany the grantee for at least 80% of the period abroad and a minimum of one semester in order to qualify for additional dependent benefits. Dependent benefits are not provided to Flex grantees.
“Cost of living in Slovakia is, on average, 34,2% lower than in the U.S.” states the Numbeo website, where you can also compare average prices of rent, activities etc. in Slovakia to prices of your home city. Average monthly salary in Slovakia is €1,545 ($1,627).
The Commission hosts an in-country orientation seminar for incoming U.S. grantees in September and a mid-year conference in late January or early February. U.S. grantees in Slovakia are also eligible for the Inter-Country Travel Grant, which offers scholars the opportunity to deliver lectures or participate in seminars, workshops, or conferences across Europe. Scholars are encouraged to take the advantage of this opportunity during their Fulbright grant period in Slovakia. Details are available on the Commission’s website or can be provided upon request.
Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State and the Fulbright Commission in the host country reserve the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.
