In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
Teach one or two introductory or intermediate undergraduate and graduate courses in scholar's area of specialization. Teaching load is approximately 10 hours per week. Participation in departmental activities is expected, such as thesis advising and curriculum development. Average class size is 30-50 students. Students purchase books.
Applicants wishing to undertake teaching/research grants should determine the percentage of the grant dedicated to each activity with the host institution.

The U.S. Embassy invites Fulbright Scholars to join embassy activities that complement the Scholar’s project and provide additional networking opportunities with the local community.
Scholars selected for this grant will be required to attend a mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation in Summer 2026.

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over short segments, preferably during the fall and/or spring semesters. Interested applicants should clearly indicate plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host-country academic community.
Flex grant parameters:
• Minimum length of the total grant is four months and the maximum is six months;
• Minimum length for any grant segment is one month and the maximum is three months;
• Two grant segments may be spread over one or two consecutive years; and
• Flex awards are offered for teaching, teaching/research, and research grants.

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country. This option allows grants to be conducted over two or three short segments. Applicants must select Flex in the application form, and clearly describe their plans for Flex in their project statement, including a project timeline. Flex grantees may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host-country academic community.
The award is open to all disciplines. Additional specializations include the arts, civil engineering, dental surgery, diplomatic studies, energy technology, forensic studies, health care, international relations, labor studies, management, medicine and surgery, physical education and sport, public administration and management, science and technology.
The university provides assistance in finding furnished housing. For the first week, the scholar is accommodated at a university residence. The university gives a Euro 750 monthly housing allowance, which is included in the monthly grant stipend amount.
All applicants must meet the Program eligibility requirements (click to review the requirements).
Fluent professional English is sufficient. However, feasibility of conducting the project in English must be demonstrated in the project statement.
All teaching will be in English; proficiency in another language is not required.
For research grant activity, language proficiency sufficient to complete the research project is required.
For applicants without local language proficiency, feasibility of conducting research must be demonstrated in the project statement.
Applicants with a Ph.D. are preferred, but professionals with university teaching experience are also encouraged.
Ph.D., including early career, with some teaching experience/and rank of associate professor or higher.
Grant benefits include a monthly maintenance allowance, comprised of a base stipend and living and housing allowances. The base stipend varies based on a scholar's current academic rank (or professional equivalent). The living allowance varies based on the city of placement, and the number of accompanying dependents. The host university will provide a housing allowance, more information is included in the Cost of Living section below. The housing allowance is not included in the monthly allowance estimates below.
Dependent housing and living allowances will not be provided to Flex grantees.

For Flex grants: round trip travel will be included for each segment of the grant for the grantee only.
$500-$1,000 (depending on the grant length) research allowance for research-only grants.
Additional living and housing allowance is provided for grantees with one accompanying dependent or two or more accompanying dependents. These amounts range from $130/month to $170/month. In addition, travel allowances are provided for up to two dependents. These amounts range from $1,800 to $3,600.
A dependent education allowance for accompanying dependents in grades K-12 is reimbursed at $5,000 maximum for one semester, $10,000 maximum for a full academic year, upon submission of receipts and depending on funding availability. Reimbursement is based on actual costs.
Dependents must accompany the grantee for at least 80% of the period abroad and a minimum of one semester in order to qualify for additional dependent benefits. Dependent benefits are not provided to Flex grantees.
In addition to the award benefits described above, the University of Malta provides a monthly housing allowance of Euro 750 (approximately $800 depending on the rate of exchange). As of 12/11/2024 the rate of exchange is 0.952 but this can fluctuate between 0.8 and 0.95.
The University of Malta provides transfers upon arrival, from the airport to the Fulbright Scholar's residence and upon departure, from the Fulbright Scholar's residence to the airport.
Please refer to the figures above for an estimate of total monthly Fulbright award benefits. Benefits may include a monthly base stipend, living and housing allowances, and additional one-time allowances. Benefits may vary based on a scholar's current academic rank (or professional equivalent), the city of placement, the type of award (teaching, teaching/research, or research), and the number of and duration of stay of accompanying dependents. Research-only or Professional Project grantees receive a standard stipend that is not adjusted for academic rank. In most cases, dependent benefits will not be provided to Flex grantees, or to grantees pursuing grants less than four months (or a semester) in length.
Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State reserves the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.

The University of Malta traces its origins to 1592, when the Knights of St. John ruled the island. The university carries out academic research and provides a vibrant higher education setting in the arts, sciences and the humanities, and. courses are designed to produce highly qualified professionals in multiple disciplines. The University of Malta is also renowned for its medical science and attracts medical students from other Mediterranean countries. Since it offers free undergraduate education in English to all Maltese students and students from European Union member states, it also attracts a vibrant and diverse international student community.
The University of Malta has established a number of joint master's degree programs with U.S. universities, which not only are popular with Maltese and American students, but also attract significant numbers of third-country nationals. The Maltese government is committed to maintaining the excellent reputation the University of Malta enjoys as a world-class academic institution by increasing affiliations with U.S. universities.
The academic year is October through the end of June, with final examinations taking place during the months of May and June. Half-yearly exams are held in late January/early February. Grant duration is ideally for the whole academic year. If funding is limited, prospective grantees should be prepared to accept a one-semester grant. Language of instruction at the University of Malta is English. Maltese and English are official languages in Malta.
Malta enjoys a standard of living and healthcare facilities similar to those of other Western European countries. Costs for private medical treatment are significantly less than in other European countries and the United States.
ATMs are available in all localities. Local banks do not open accounts for foreign residents. Revolut is a very popular online banking site with an app that facilitates online money transfers and exchanges. Credit cards, such as Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in Malta.
