Tips and Tricks for your Alumni Impact Video

A Simple Background
Shoot your video in a well-lit room with even, subject-facing natural sunlight or lighting. Be sure your background isn’t cluttered or distracting to viewers. If you choose to shoot outside, please face the sun/lighting source to prevent being backlit and shadowy.

Choose A Quiet Area
A quiet room, free of noise-making devices and interruptions, as well as children or pets, makes the best location. Speak directly into the microphone on your smartphone or laptop to record clear audio.

Frame the Shot
Using a horizontal orientation, hold your recording device at eye level. This may be accomplished by propping up your smartphone camera on a level shelf, or by placing your laptop on a stack of books. Note: Looking down at the camera may alter the natural proportions of your face. Frame yourself in the middle of the screen, with equal space above and below your head. Be sure to make eye contact with your viewers by looking directly at the camera. Connect with your viewers, and most importantly—don’t forget to smile!

Dress For Success
The best clothing option is a solid-color long-sleeve shirt, sweater, or jacket. Patterns or prints can be distracting, and solid white may look “washed out.” Please refrain from wearing jewelry or objects that move and make noise.

Speak From the Heart
We want your answers to be honest and natural. Reading from a prepared script may come across as forced and stilted—speak freely from your heart, and share your passion for mutual understanding, your field of research, and your Fulbright Scholar experience.
