Kate Copeland is a visual artist, educator, and administrator at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) at Willamette University in Portland, Oregon. In Fulbright Scholar grants to India (2013) and Belgium (2022), she created artwork while simultaneously exploring pedagogical modalities in collegiate art education. Working within the Graphic Arts Department at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) Baroda in India, she collaborated with students and faculty to reincorporate photographic techniques into the university’s curriculum and facility, and helped to reprint and preserve historic images from lithography stones. Within the Printmaking Department at Royal Academy of Art Antwerp in Belgium, she taught workshops in alternative photographic processes, and concurrently researched the mergers at Royal Academy and LUCA School of Arts in order to better facilitate PNCA’s merger with Willamette University. Kate also served as artist-in-residence at Industriemuseum in Ghent with a project based on historic wood type. Kate’s spouse and child accompanied her to Belgium.

Kate’s Fulbright experiences have catalyzed personal and professional growth. She now infuses her curricular and pedagogical work with curiosity, empathy, comparative research skills, cultural relativism, and a better understanding for the limitations of her own perspective. Kate has created and exhibited artwork connected to her Fulbright experiences, hosted exhibitions and artist talks by artists she has met on Fulbrights, and is currently producing a risograph zine featuring her research on collegiate mergers. Kate is working with PNCA to coordinate major exhibition and artistic residency opportunities featuring partnerships with artists cultivated during her Fulbrights in India and Belgium.
