In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
Deliver lectures, seminars or workshops to students and professors and assist in curriculum development in any area. Collaborative research and publication with Chilean colleagues is also encouraged. Applicants should propose a work ratio between teaching and research. Although final arrangements will be negotiated by the grantee and the host institution, the Fulbright Commission recommends a 50:50 time commitment split.
Any accredited university or research institution in Chile. Collaboration with regional universities and multiple affiliations are welcome. If you are unsure if your affiliate university is accredited, please contact the Fulbright Commission in Chile.
Three to four months
Grants must begin in either August 2025 or March 2026. These dates reflect the Chilean academic semesters, outside of which universities are closed.
Projects in Latin American studies and U.S.- Chile relations are also welcome.

Candidates should contact the potential host institution to discuss research interests and project feasibility. The Fulbright Commission in Chile assists applicants without established networks in Chile to identify potential hosts institutions and facilitates communication as necessary. Applicants are encouraged to register qualified language evaluator, such as a language instructor or a translator, to conduct the external assessment in the application. Being a native speaker alone does not qualify an individual to conduct the assessment.
Applicants who are native speakers do not need to complete an external evaluation.
Working knowledge of Spanish is recommended. The host institution may require proficiency for certain activities, especially if the applicant is planning to teach. Please have the host reference their Spanish requirements, or lack thereof, in the letter of invitation.
Applicants must hold an academic appointment. Academic applicants who hold a terminal degree must have a rank of Assistant Professor or higher and three years of teaching experience. Applicants with a master's degree and 10 years of experience in academia will also be considered.
You may be asked to participate in an interview as part of the in-country selection process.
The total monthly allowance for a U.S. Scholar amounts to USD$3,500. The host institution in Chile is responsible for co-financing the allowance with the Fulbright Commission in Chile by providing USD$1,200 monthly (CLP $850.000 or equivalent, stated in the letter of invitation), while the Fulbright Commission contributes USD$2,300. There are no extra benefits for dependents.
Note: Applicants must share the co-financing arrangement with prospective host institutions as early as possible in the application process. The monthly maintenance allowance from the host institution may be allayed with an in-kind housing contribution upon previous agreement. Host institutions are strongly encouraged to contact Mason Taylor at the Fulbright Commission at masontaylor@fulbright.cl for any questions regarding the maintenance allowance. The Fulbright Commission will confirm the maintenance allowance with the host institution ahead of final selections.

During their grant period, Fulbright U.S. Scholars in the Western Hemisphere (WHA) region may apply for a short-term regional travel grant for activities such as workshops, seminars, presentations, lectures, performances, exhibits, curricular advising and similar projects at institutions in eligible WHA countries. (Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados and Eastern Caribbean, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and Uruguay).
The Regional Travel Program covers travel to and from the destination; lodging may be offered by the host institution. Scholars may only apply for this grant once they are in country on their Fulbright grant. Scholars who apply for the Flex award are ineligible for the Regional Travel Program. Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State and the Fulbright Commission in the host country reserve the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.
