In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
Responsibilities of combined Teaching/Research awards are evenly divided between activities (50: 50 teaching to research). Activities may be organized by semester (1-semester teaching; 1-semester research) or carried out simultaneously. Teaching/Research Scholars should expect to teach approximately two undergraduate or graduate courses in their discipline during the grant period.
Scholars on Teaching awards can expect to teach approximately three undergraduate or graduate courses.
Teaching activities may include co-teaching one or more courses with a faculty member from the host institution. Scholars will also advise student theses and contribute to curriculum planning and program evaluation. They may be invited to conduct professional development workshops for advanced graduate students or junior faculty.
When possible, graduate student participation in research activities is encouraged (e.g. assisting with field research in rural areas). Research collaboration among faculty is not required.

The grant length is typically 10 months, beginning in August or in February. However, grant start dates can be flexible and should be determined based on academic schedules at host university, research plans, and personal circumstances.
Projects are accepted in all disciplines. There is a strong interest in the following disciplines: agriculture, medical sciences, information technology / computer sciences, biology, environmental sciences, engineering (especially petroleum and geosystems), economics, anthropology, public administration, business, architecture / urban planning, geology, oceanography, and water resources management.
All applicants must meet the Program eligibility requirements (click to review the requirements).
Applicants must register qualified language evaluator, such as a language instructor or a translator, to conduct the external assessment in the application. Being a native speaker alone does not qualify an individual to conduct the assessment.
Applicants who are native speakers do not need to complete an external evaluation.
For most teaching activities, advanced Portuguese is required. It is possible that certain courses can be taught in English, but this should be decided in consultation with host institution.
All grantees should have at least intermediate Portuguese speaking skills for basic administrative needs, daily activities, and social interactions. Knowledge of a local dialect is not required, but could be useful for field research in rural areas.
Scholars, postdocs, and professionals with three to five years of university or college teaching experience are preferred.
You may be asked to participate in an interview as part of the in-country selection process.

Round-trip, economy-class, international travel arranged by travel agent designated by IIE, for scholar and up to two accompanying dependents. A $2,850 allowance will be provided to cover the costs associated with relocation and excess baggage.
$1,000 books and educational materials allowance; if possible, educational materials should be donated to the host institution (or other entity) upon grantee's departure. (For Teaching and Teaching/Research awards only.)
Additional living and housing allowance is provided for grantees with one accompanying dependent or two or more accompanying dependents. These amounts range from $200/month to $500/month.
In addition, round-trip, economy class travel is provided for up to two dependents.
Dependent education allowance up to $12,500 per child or $25,000 per family for accompanying dependents in grades K-12 is reimbursed for a full academic year, upon submission of receipts, and depending on funding availability. Amount may be adjusted for shorter grant periods. Reimbursement is based on actual cost of tuition and fees only.
Dependents must accompany the grantee for at least 80% of the period abroad and a minimum of one semester in order to qualify for additional dependent benefits. Dependent benefits are not provided to Flex grantees.
When university housing is provided to Fulbright Scholars, grantees will receive a supplemental housing allowance in lieu of a full housing allowance for refurbishments, utilities, and other miscellaneous expenses that arise. The full housing allowance will not be provided to grantees if they elect to decline on-campus or university housing.
Please refer to the figures above for an estimate of total monthly Fulbright award benefits. Benefits may include a monthly base stipend, living and housing allowances, and additional one-time allowances. Benefits may vary based on a scholar's current academic rank (or professional equivalent), the city of placement, the type of award (teaching, teaching/research, or research), and the number of and duration of stay of accompanying dependents. Research-only or Professional Project grantees receive a standard stipend that is not adjusted for academic rank. In most cases, dependent benefits will not be provided to Flex grantees, or to grantees pursuing grants less than four months (or a semester) in length.
Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State reserves the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.
Mozambique
Mozambique is a beautiful Lusophone country in southeastern Africa. It is a country that is rich in natural resources, biologically and culturally diverse, and has a tropical climate. Mozambique's extensive coastline, fronting the Mozambique Channel, which separates mainland Africa from the island of Madagascar, offers some of Africa’s best natural harbors. This has allowed Mozambique an important role in the maritime economy of the Indian Ocean, while the country’s white sand beaches are an important attraction for the growing tourism industry. Fertile soils in the northern and central areas of Mozambique have yielded varied and abundant agriculture, and the great Zambezi River has provided ample water for irrigation and the basis for a regionally important hydroelectric power industry.
Surrounded by English-speaking neighbors and rapidly developing with an influx of multinational companies and investors, especially in the energy field, Mozambique will benefit from well-trained young professionals with good English skills and professional training. Mozambique has shown an expanding interest in the English Language; the country has a growing number of Mozambicans seeking study opportunities abroad, and universities are seeking to provide both teachers and students with English speaking abilities. The nascent educational system seeks to improve literacy rates where access to educational opportunities lag and improve quality of education nationally across all disciplines. Educational administration programs aim to improve future educators’ abilities to plan, manage, and evaluate the development of the education system at the societal, institutional, and classroom levels. The American School, French School, and International schools offering Cambridge and National curricula, are available in the capital city, Maputo.
The Public Affairs Section can offer housing recommendations in Mozambique. The Section also helps with initial contact to host institutions, provides pre-arrival support, and in-country briefings to facilitate the move. More details of the extent of these services are shared after a Fulbrighter is selected.
Maputo has several pharmacies with limited stocks and medicinal availability. English is not widely spoken in hospital settings. Many people living in the international community travel to South Africa for medicine and doctor visits. Malaria can be a serious problem, especially outside of urban areas.
