Tanzania

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
Collaborate with faculty on research and conduct research in area of specialization. Teach undergraduate and, if offered, graduate courses in area of specialization. Assist with curriculum development, supervise undergraduate and graduate students. Grantees should plan on a 50:50 ratio of time spent on teaching to research. This can be adjusted depending on the needs of the host institution.

Grants can start August 2025 or later. It is strongly encouraged for grantees to arrive six weeks prior to the start of the academic year or semester in order to allow for process of immigration permits. The academic calendar differs from university to university and is subject to change; therefore timing of the grant is sometimes subject to change as well. Any alternate placements and starting dates will be negotiated with candidates selected for awards.

Public Institutions
Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam offers graduate, postgraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. level education in architecture and design, construction economics and management, environmental sciences and technology, geo-spatial science and technology, urban and regional planning, real estate studies and information systems management.
University of Dar es Salaam offers arts and social sciences, commerce and management, sciences, education, aquatic sciences and technology, law and engineering. In addition, there are institutes of development studies, Kiswahili research, resource assessment and marine sciences. University of Dar es Salaam also has the following constituent colleges: Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) and Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE).
University of Dodoma offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in many disciplines, including education, foreign languages, mathematics, computer science, economics, business and management, sociology, geography/environmental sciences, informatics and virtual education.
Mzumbe University in Morogoro offers degrees in economics, business management, public administration, local government, economic planning, accountancy and financial management. Mzumbe has the following campuses; Dar es Salaam, Mbeya and Mwanza for undergraduate and graduate studies.
Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro offers degrees in agriculture, agronomy, home economics and human nutrition, horticulture, animal science, food science and technology, agricultural engineering, agricultural extension and education, agricultural economics and agribusiness, wildlife management, veterinary medicine and environmental science, and has a constituent college, Moshi University College of Cooperative and Business Studies.
The Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha offers masters and Ph.D. courses on Life Sciences and Bioengineering, Computational and Communication Science and Engineering, Materials, Energy, Water and Environmental Sciences and Business Studies and Humanities.
Open University Offers courses in Science, Technology, Environmental Studies, Education, Law, Business and Social Sciences.
Private Institutions
Muslim University of Morogoro offers undergraduate degrees in the fields of mass communication, education and Islamic studies, and courses in those fields, as well as mathematics, geography, English, Arabic and history.
St. Augustine University of Tanzania in Mwanza offers degrees in mass communication, business administration, education, sociology, philosophy, religious studies and law, and has the following constituent colleges: Jordan University College, Bukoba University Center, Tabora University College and Songea University College.
Tumaini University Makumira offers degrees in Theology, Social Sciences, Music, Law and Sciences.
Iringa University offers degrees in journalism, education, business administration, law and theology.
Hubert Kairuki Memorial University offers courses in medicine.
University of Arusha offers degrees in education, theology, religious studies, business administration and office administration.
College of African Wildlife Management offers a range of courses in wildlife management including eco-tourism and management of ecosystems, such as forest, wetland and marine, professional hunting and land use management, statistics, and plant and animal conservation.
Catholic University of Health & Allied Sciences in Bugando (CUHAS-Bugando) has three schools and one institute: School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine and Institute of Allied Health and Sciences.
Ruaha Catholic University offers programs that specialize in four professional areas: Information and Communication Technology, Law, Arts and Social Sciences, and Business and Management Sciences leading to the Ph.D Degree, Master’s Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, Bachelor’s Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates. It also provides short courses, seminars, consultancy and research.

Applicants are strongly encouraged and advised to work with their host department to obtain a letter of invitation from the Office of the Vice Chancellor.
All teaching will be in English; proficiency in another language is not required. Some knowledge of Swahili will be useful in social settings, but is not required.
Scholars are required to have at least three years of university or higher education teaching experience.

Round-trip, economy-class, international travel arranged by travel agent designated by IIE, for scholar and up to two accompanying dependents. A $2,550 allowance will be provided to cover the costs associated with relocation and excess baggage.
$1,000 books and educational materials allowance; if possible, educational materials should be donated to the host institution (or other entity) upon grantee's departure. (For Teaching and Teaching/Research awards)
Additional living and housing allowance is provided for grantees with one accompanying dependent or two or more accompanying dependents. These amounts range from $200/month to $500/month.
In addition, round-trip, economy class travel is provided for up to two dependents.
Dependent education allowance of up to $12,500 per child or $25,000 per family for accompanying dependents in grades K-12 is reimbursed for a full academic year, upon submission of receipts, and depending on funding availability. Amount may be adjusted for shorter grant periods. Reimbursement is based on actual cost of tuition and fees only.
Dependents must accompany the grantee for at least 80% of the period abroad and a minimum of one semester in order to qualify for additional dependent benefits. Dependent benefits are not provided to Flex grantees.
If bringing children along, several private schools are available for dependent children who accompany the Scholar.
A one-time supplemental allowance of $500 will be provided to Scholars to cover the cost of research permits. When university housing is provided to Fulbright Scholars, grantees will receive a supplemental housing allowance in lieu of a full housing allowance for refurbishments, utilities, and other miscellaneous expenses that arise. The full housing allowance will not be provided to grantees if they elect to decline on-campus or university housing.
Please refer to the figures above for an estimate of total monthly Fulbright award benefits. Benefits may include a monthly base stipend, living and housing allowances, and additional one-time allowances. Benefits may vary based on a scholar's current academic rank (or professional equivalent), the city of placement, the type of award (teaching, teaching/research, or research), and the number of and duration of stay of accompanying dependents. Research-only or Professional Project grantees receive a standard stipend that is not adjusted for academic rank. In most cases, dependent benefits will not be provided to Flex grantees, or to grantees pursuing grants less than four months (or a semester) in length.
Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State reserves the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.
Tanzania
The United Republic of Tanzania is located in East Africa and has an Indian Ocean coastline. Its political capital is Dodoma, while its main commercial city is Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's first official language is Kiswahili and English is the second language. The U.S. Embassy in Tanzania partners with Tanzanians in the Areas of Good Governance, Health, Education, Business, and Security. Tanzania is young – 70+ percent of its population is under 30.
Tanzania has several established Universities. Undergraduate classes are large (100-350+ students) in public Universities, but advanced and graduate classes are smaller (less than 10-30).The U.S. Embassy is dedicated to improving the quality of instruction and delivery at these institutions, while at that same time, helping to build long-term collaborations between Tanzanian and U.S. universities. Academic semesters normally run from October through December and January through June. Fulbright Scholars are expected to come for the full academic year. Tanzanian universities currently face a shortage of PhD holders and experienced faculty to help teach and develop the programs they currently offer.
Candidates are advised to correspond with potential host institutions to determine whether their specializations fit into existing programs. Submitting a letter of invitation from the host institution is not required at the application stage. However, a letter of invitation is required to obtain a research clearance and a residency permit
All Fulbright Scholars must apply for and obtain research clearance prior to travelling to Tanzania. The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam advises applicants to work with their chosen host institutions for guidelines on the process and preferably initiate the clearance process well prior to arrival in country to ensure adequate time for processing and, ultimately, teaching and research on the ground. The government of Tanzania has mandated that all researchers and scholars must be affiliated with approved Tanzanian Universities. Scholars must have a doctorate degree and a minimum of three years of postdoctoral university or college teaching experience
