In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities.
Conduct teaching or teaching/research, including lectures, seminars and/or workshops, in any area of the Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, or Pure and Applied Sciences (STEM). Collaborate with colleagues at Greek universities, museums and other cultural organizations and research centers. Projects with a lecturing component are preferred. Lecturing can include teaching a course and/or offering seminars/workshops. Possibility to create joint degree programs between U.S. and host institution. Professional projects such as but not limited to the arts, museums, non-profits and other organizations with a cultural, humanitarian and/or educational scope are allowed.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to affiliate with an appropriate host institution in Greece. A list of possible hosts can be found at
Fall term: Three months; Spring term: three to four months. Total grant length is either three or four months depending on the term selected.
Grants must begin in either October 2027 (three months) or February 2028 (three to four months).

Letters of affiliation should be sought from September through early July.
English is sufficient for teaching/lecturing; additional language proficiency is not required. However, knowledge of Greek is useful.
For independent research projects, Greek language proficiency sufficient to complete the research project is required. Feasibility of conducting research must be demonstrated in the project statement.
For research, teaching and research/teaching activities, a Ph.D. or other terminal degree is required. For professional project applicants, a Ph.D. or other terminal degree is not required.
Applicants must have at least three years of relevant experience. Applicants outside of academia should have some teaching experience. Professionals and artists must have a minimum of seven years of experience in their respective fields.
Proposals from U.S. higher education administrators are welcome and should have a focus on:
- assessing and recommending strategies for the improvement of services on Greek campuses and/or
- further the internationalization of local universities by forming partnerships with their U.S. counterparts.
U.S. administrators will have opportunities to work closely with the Rectors, International Affairs and Career offices of Greek universities, and with the Ministry of Education and the Greek Scholarship Foundation (Erasmus+ program).
You may be asked to participate in an interview as part of the in-country selection process.
The Fulbright Foundation in Greece reserves the right to interview candidates. Interviews are conducted online in English.
$2,500 (USD) per month.
One-time settling-in allowance of $1,200 (USD), round-trip airfare for grantee only up to $1,700 (USD) or up to $3,000 (USD) with accompanying dependent, and excess luggage allowance up to $200 (USD) for grantee only.
Up to $350 (USD) for books and research materials.
The base stipend amount will be increased by $150 USD per accompanying dependent and for up to two dependents.
Up to $3,000 (USD) per family for dependents in elementary or secondary school.
Dependents must accompany the grantee for at least 80% of the period abroad and a minimum of one semester in order to qualify for additional dependent benefits. Dependent benefits are not provided to Flex grantees.
Housing expenses range from $600-$1,000 (USD) for a studio apartment to $800-$1,500 (USD) for 2-3 bedroom apartments per month depending on location. These rates are for furnished apartments and include basic utilities. Quality fresh produce, groceries and other types of food can be found at reasonable prices. Eating out can be fairly inexpensive. Local transportation in major cities is not expensive (Metro, tram, buses and cabs).
For grantee only, up to $450 (USD) for Greek language lessons.
Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State and the Fulbright Commission in the host country reserve the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in Greece
The U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program is central to the mission of the Fulbright Foundation in Greece, bringing outstanding U.S. scholars from a wide range of disciplines to Greek universities and to public or private organizations. The Program promotes cultural and educational ties between the United States and Greece through teaching, research, and scholarly collaboration.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to secure affiliation(s) in Greece and submit letter(s) of invitation from host institutions outlining the proposed teaching and/or research activities and available facilities or support. English is sufficient for teaching and lecturing; however, language proficiency should match the project’s scope, and basic Greek is helpful for everyday life. The academic year generally runs from October through June, with winter and spring breaks. Fulbright Greece provides administrative support, including visa guidance, pre-departure and arrival assistance, as well as opportunities for professional, cultural, and alumni engagement.
