Two Fulbright U.S. Scholar Alumni Win 2018 Pulitzer Prizes
Congratulations to Fulbright U.S. Scholar alumni Jake Halpern and Jack E. Davis on becoming 2018 Pulitzer Prize winners! The Pulitzer Prize honors excellence in American journalism and the arts.
Author, journalist, and radio producer Jake Halpern is a 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner in Editorial Cartooning, along with Michael Sloan, freelance cartoonist, “For an emotionally powerful series, told in graphic narrative form, that chronicled the daily struggles of a real-life family of refugees and its fear of deportation.” As a 2011-2012 Fulbright U.S. Scholar to India, Halpern taught narrative journalism at the University of Kerala. In addition to teaching journalism classes, Halpern explored and wrote about the secret vaults of a temple in Southern India, the connection between yoga and snakes, and an Indian guru known as the “hugging saint.” Halpern was joined by his wife and two sons during his Fulbright award to India.
Jack E. Davis is a professor of environmental history at the University of Florida and a 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner in History for his book, The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea (Liveright/W.W. Norton). The Pulitzer Prize Board described Professor Davis’ book as “An important environmental history of the Gulf of Mexico that brings crucial attention to Earth’s 10th-largest body of water, one of the planet’s most diverse and productive marine ecosystems.” During his 2002-2003 Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to Jordan, Davis taught at the University of Jordan in Amman.
