As a U.S. scholar to Italy (Università di Roma-LUMSA), Joellen conducted research and teaching activities connected with issues and needs for internationalization of higher education teaching and learning. She conducted collaborative research on faculty development during university internationalization which resulted in 7 peer-reviewed publications in American and Italian journals and several presentations at professional conferences. She taught a doctoral seminar, and conducted 16 faculty professional development workshops in 8 Italian universities and the Italian Fulbright Commission during her award and since then.
